About the Department
The Department of Agricultural Economics
and Agribusiness (DAEA) formerly known as Department of Rural Economy is one
of the major centres for agricultural economics training in Tanzania, Eastern
and Southern Africa. The change of name was aimed at reflecting the
additional roles and activities performed by the department as demanded by
the changing economic environment, particularly the emerging liberalized
economic structure in Tanzania.
The department has the responsibility to
conduct agricultural economics and agribusiness training and research at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Currently the department offers a
B.Sc. degree in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness and Masters and
Doctoral degrees in Agricultural Economics. The department provides contract
research, consultancy and advisory services to a broad range of clients
including government departments and agencies, international organizations,
private sector firms and non-governmental organizations. The department
has well trained staff (17 Ph.D. holders and 7 staff who are in their PhD
programs, 10 M.Sc./MBA holders). Major areas of expertise include Farm and
Business Management, Agricultural Marketing and Trade, Natural Resource and
Environmental Economics, Agricultural Finance, Project Analysis, Policy
Analysis, Gender Issues, Rural Development and Livelihood Studies. The department envisages offering
flexibility in undergraduate courses by allowing optional specialization in
areas such as marketing, agricultural finance, business management and
planning, resource and environmental economics and agricultural or rural
development policy analysis and planning. It also envisage to have
elaborate and flexible M.Sc. level training in Agricultural Economics
with specialization in Policy Analysis, Natural Resource and Environmental
Economics, Agricultural Marketing and Management, and Agricultural Economics
and Finance. The department offers a PhD in Agricultural Economics by
Research which is highly recognized in the region. The M.Sc. programme
started in the mid 70s and PhD in Agricultural Economics started in 1990s. It is also envisaged to have a
comprehensive Masters in Business Administration with options in
Agribusiness, Human Resource Management, Finance and Accounting, Marketing
and Entrepreneurship and international trade and finance. MBA-Agribusiness
program started in 2005. DAEA runs short courses on entrepreneurship,
business development; customer service and other economics related retooling
courses. Also plans are underway to establish an Agribusiness Incubator for
hands on acquisition of business skills. The department has a functioning computer lab and a library. All members of staff are connected to the Internet. Currently the department is housing the Agricultural Economics Society of Tanzania (AGREST) and the Journal of Agricultural Economics and Development (JAED).
