About the Department

The Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness (DAEA) formerly known as Department of Rural Economy is one of the major centres for agricultural economics training in Tanzania, Eastern and Southern Africa. The change of name was aimed at reflecting the additional roles and activities performed by the department as demanded by the changing economic environment, particularly the emerging liberalized economic structure in Tanzania.

The department has the responsibility to conduct agricultural economics and agribusiness training and research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Currently the department offers a B.Sc. degree in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness and Masters and Doctoral degrees in Agricultural Economics. The department provides contract research, consultancy and advisory services to a broad range of clients including government departments and agencies, international organizations, private sector firms and non-governmental organizations. The department has well trained staff (17 Ph.D. holders and 7 staff who are in their PhD programs, 10 M.Sc./MBA holders). Major areas of expertise include Farm and Business Management, Agricultural Marketing and Trade, Natural Resource and Environmental Economics, Agricultural Finance, Project Analysis, Policy Analysis, Gender Issues, Rural Development and Livelihood Studies.

The department envisages offering flexibility in undergraduate courses by allowing optional specialization in areas such as marketing, agricultural finance, business management and planning, resource and environmental economics and agricultural or rural development policy analysis and planning. It also envisage to have elaborate and flexible M.Sc. level training in Agricultural Economics with specialization in Policy Analysis,  Natural Resource and Environmental Economics, Agricultural Marketing and Management, and Agricultural Economics and Finance. The department offers a PhD in Agricultural Economics by Research which is highly recognized in the region. The M.Sc. programme started in the mid 70s and PhD in Agricultural Economics started in 1990s.

It is also envisaged to have a comprehensive Masters in Business Administration with options in Agribusiness, Human Resource Management, Finance and Accounting, Marketing and Entrepreneurship and international trade and finance.
