LEARNING OUTCOME

At the end of the programme the students shall be able to:

1.    Principles of growth, reproduction and adaptation of aquatic organisms
2.    Requirements and suitability of different aquaculture production systems
3.    Water quality requirements for different aquatic organisms and methods for evaluation of water quality 
4.    Principles of feeding, nutrient requirement estimation and feed evaluation methods
5.    Principles of genetic improvement and evaluation methods
6.    International biosecurity measures, standards for food safety, plant health and animal health
7.    Plan and manage aquaculture enterprises economically and sustainably
8.    Advice fish farmers and managers of aquaculture enterprises
9.    Analyze data from aquaculture experiments and production enterprises and interpret the results
10.    Articulate national and international fisheries and related policies
11.    Determine water quality parameters in aquaculture production systems
12.    Design, construct and manage different aquaculture production systems
13.    Formulate and compound fish feeds for important aquaculture species and different life stages
14.    Apply different reproductive technologies and biotechnology to enhance fish reproduction and production of good quality fingerlings
15.    Design and operate hatcheries for important cultured fish species
16.    Design, implement and evaluate genetic improvement programme for important cultured fish species
17.    Develop and implement environmental monitoring programme for aquatic resources
18.    Design biosecurity measures and apply principles of biosecurity and welfare in management of aquaculture enterprises
19.    Prepare research proposal, execute the research and prepare scientific publications
 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Entry requirements shall be as per Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Regulations and Guidelines for Higher Degrees (2011). Candidates for admission to the MSc. Aquaculture degree programme shall either hold BSc. Aquaculture or natural science Bachelor's degree with good overall scores (at least a second lower class with a GPA of 2.7) from SUA or a qualification deemed to be equivalent to natural science Bachelor's degree of SUA from an institution of higher learning recognized by Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).
