Welcome to the Veterinary Surgery and Theriogenology
The Department of Veterinary surgery and Theriogenology, is one of the six Departments which were originally set up when the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was started in 1984. The Department teaches clinical and paraclinical courses to professional veterinary students and non-professional students. The Department teaches professional Veterinary Surgery, Theriogenology (Obstetrics and Reproduction), Radiology and Medical imaging to clinical year students. These courses provide professional theoretical, hands-on and practical knowledge to students, which makes the students professional surgeons who graduates and later become registered Veterinary Surgeons. Apart from Veterinary degree students, the Department also teaches students in Animal Science (AS), Wildlife Management (WM) and Bachelor of Science in Laboratory Science (BLS). The Department also trains postgraduate students. It is involved in training the MVM students specializing in Mater of Veterinary Medicine (MVM) in Surgery, Radiology and Theriogenology.
Currently the department have twenty two fulltime staff members, including 19 support staff consisting of Office Personel, Technicians, Field Officers theatre attendants; and 13 Academic staff.
The Department contribute to human resource consultancy to the University teaching hospital in the fields of Surgery, Radiology Theriogenology and other clinical problems.
The Department is also involved in research regarding Surgery, Theriogenology and Medical imaging Diagnostics.
These research are expected to enhance and improve life and well being of animals and human being.

VISION:
The Department vision is to provide qualitative knowledge in Surgery, Radiology, Theriogenology, Medical imaging, Wildlife Management and Animal Science. Also it conducts research in these fields.
MISSION:
The Department have a mission of producing excellent professional Surgeons, Radiologists and Theriogenologists. This is achieved through teaching lectures, practical and experiments to Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students. Also research is part and parcel of the above.
TRAINING:
The Department teaches Veterinary Surgery and Radiology to 3rd year Vet. Students, also it teaches operative Veterinary Surgery and Theriogenology to 4th year; also clinical Surgery and Theriogenology to 5th year BVM Students. These belong to the degree programme for professional Veterinary Surgeons.
The Department also teaches Medical imaging to 2nd year students the BLS degree programme.
Also the Department teaches the students of the Wildlife Management and Animal Science degree programmes in various courses.
Also the Department is involved in teaching postgraduate courses related to Surgery, Theriogenology, Radiology and Wildlife. These are up to the level of Master of Science (MSc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Also, the Department runs short courses in Surgery, Radiology and Theriogenology arranged by VETCONSULT.
REASEARCH, EXTENSION AND OUTREACH:
The Department continues to do research in Theriogenology, Surgery, Radiology, Wildlife and related field in domestic and wild animals. The research areas are as narrated here-under:
- Anaesthesiology in companion animal ruminants
- Dentistry in canines, feline and ruminants
- Orthopaedics in animals
- Arthrology in animals
- Endocrinology in animals
- Soft tissue Surgery is small and large animals
- Artificial Insermination and improvement of Local Tanzania Zebu cattle
- Radioimmunoassay in bovine
- Grasscutter Farming: A strategy for environmental conservation, protein and livelihood security
CONSULTANCY:
The Department provides consultancy to the Government and private sector projects related to the fields of specialization of the Department.
Also, the Surgery, Theriogenology and Radiology theatres being parts of the Department, we provide consultancy in diagnostics Management and control of conditions affecting animals which needs the attention of provisions related to our Department.
